Article: March LGBTQ+ Dates

March LGBTQ+ Dates
As we enter March, we are highlighting three dates for the LGBTQ+ community. These aren't just moments for celebration; they are vital reminders of the systemic hurdles many face and the ongoing fight for basic rights and visibility.

March 1: Zero Discrimination Day
While this day is now a global call for equality, its history is rooted in the HIV/AIDS crisis. It was established in 2014 by UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé as a direct response to international stigmas surrounding those who have HIV/AIDS.
More than a decade later, the struggle continues. In 2026, LGBTQ+ individuals still regularly and disproportionately experience discrimination within the healthcare system. Whether it is a lack of provider education, "gatekeeping" of necessary treatments, or outright bias, these barriers prevent people from receiving life-saving care. Equity in medicine is not a luxury; it is a fundamental human right.
March 21: Omnisexual Awareness Day
Omnisexuality refers to people who are attracted to those of all genders. It is often compared to pansexuality, as pansexuals are also attracted to all genders. The key difference is that pan folks are typically "gender-blind," while omnisexual individuals recognize and acknowledge gender as a factor in their attraction.
March 31: International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV)
Visibility is certainly a complicated concept in the current political and social climate. For many transgender and non-binary individuals, being "visible" is a radical, exhausting act of courage. Far too many cannot be visible for their own safety.
In the past few years, there has been a significant increase in hostile legislation—we're talking thousands of bills proposed around the country—and rhetoric aimed at suppression, erasure, and disenfranchisement. Many in the trans community are in the fight of their lives just for the right to exist in public spaces, access healthcare, and live safely. Support those who are out and open—they are often standing on the front lines for the basic right to exist.
How to Support the Community This Month
- Advocate: Contact your representatives regarding anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. If you're in my home state of California, I highly recommend Equality California as a leading advocacy organization and guide.
- Educate: Share resources regarding LGBTQ+ healthcare rights and inclusive medical practices.
- Direct Aid: If you have the means, donate to mutual aid funds in your area that support trans youth and those living with HIV.
